There’s a Reason Gay Marriage Is Winning, While Abortion Rights Are Losing

Interesting article from The Nation about the similarities and differences in society's perceptions about these "culture wars"

  1. Although it entirely ignores race, this is a really good article summing up the growing conservatism surrounding the gay marriage movement. The whole "using the master's tools" thing coming up yet again...I wonder what gay marriage organizations' stances are on contraceptives/abortion...if there are any that are so conservative that they oppose??

  2. This got me thinking about the success of the gay-marriage movement, and gay rights/acceptance more broadly. It seems like a lot of this success is due to abandoning discussions of sex (and, to some extent, feminism, which Pollitt argues is tied up in the reproductive rights movement and discussions of sex). Does the contemporary queer movement need to go back to its roots, so to speak, or would this mean sacrificing the political gains we've achieved?
